More Birthday Wishes

In honor of Grandma Jo's birthday today, we share this little reflection/letter given to her for Mother's Day 2009

Memories of My Mom
stories of my childhood & my mom that I share with my kids

I remember my mom making clothes for us when we were kids. I remember complaining about it as any child would. The most memorable part was that we all looked alike!

I remember playing hockey in the kitchen wearing cowboy boots while mom fixed dinner. She told me repeatedly not to wear the cowboy boots when playing hockey in the house; it scuffs up the floor. But I loved those cowboy boots so the floor was always scuffed until I out-grew the boots.

My mom was a zookeeper. We had chickens & rabbits & gerbils & turtles & snakes & dogs & cats & puppies, which always ended up under the shed. Mom would crawl under the shed and pull them out so they would have a proper home IN the shed, not UNDER the shed.

I remember my mom holding us & rocking us when our pets died.

I remember eating raisins with worms in 'em. I remember taking ipecac and throwing up in the tub. I still don't eat raisins by themselves.

I remember I woke up one morning, came out to breakfast, and saw that mom had a broken arm. I wondered what happened over night? Ladder fell while mom was on it. I also remember watching my mom break her arm after slipping on the ice. Ouch!

I remember that once while mom was driving the station wagon in the snow, we were clipped by a farm truck that took off the side view mirror. (editorial from Amanda: oh, that is SOOOOO Jefferson County!!)

I remember the time I backed the car out of the garage, catching the bumper on the toolbox, smashing it into the wall & crushing the wall. I remember mom trying to fix it so I wouldn’t get in trouble. Dad never did notice it.

I remember having a summer job at the pheasant farm & mom always being ready for us when we got home so we could shower the 'pheasant ick' off.

I remember my mom being a great cook. She cooked things I love that I can't get anymore (like liver & onions and stuffed peppers). I learned how to make chili from my mom. My wife now makes chili like mom taught me. After we got older & mom went back to work, the quality of dinner meals went down (the onion burger incident.)

And most importantly I remember my mom always being there.
I love you mom.
And my family loves you too.
- Jeff
Happy Birthday to you, Grandma Jo!
