Hockey Screams

When we make plans to do something fun or special with the boys, we often wait til the last minute to surprise them with the news. If we tell them too far in advance, because of Caleb's obsessive tendencies, we're met with a barrage of questions about every last detail. It's much more peaceful for all of us if we spring the secret on them just before.

It can be challenging to keep the secret, especially when the surprise takes planning or preparation. For our February vacation to Great Wolf Lodge in KC, I packed the day before and kept the mess hidden in our dinky 12x10 master bedroom. Since the boys don't venture in there much, the mound of clothes and pool accessories remained undiscovered. The following morning, Lucas began to suspect when he saw the Google maps page on my laptop displaying directions to GWL in KC. (rats!) I heard him whispering to Caleb, and they began putting clues together. Once we confirmed their suspicion, they were alarmingly calm yet very stoked to take this unexpected vacation. Caleb and Luc were telling us how they figured it all out, but Isaac shrugged his shoulders and chimed in with, "I just didn't find out anything" (he didn't have a clue what was going on).

We still enjoy surprising them occasionally. If we plan well, we can capture their reactions on tape. Watch the latest episode below. Notice that our boys' screams (or Isaac's mini tantrum) will give any kid a run for their money. I am especially proud of how well Isaac milked this one. :)
